We’ve got a love story today that’ll take you back to your childhood, friends. Back to Roger and Anita. Back to Disney. Back to Pongo. Back to Perdita. Back to an evening of chance and happenstance, when a four-legged friend was the beginning of something new, something fresh, a real-life romance. It didn’t happen in London and the dog wasn’t spotted with patches of black and of white, but it did happen under the stars, and, like the movie, the timing was oh-so right.
He was out for a walk. One evening. It was late. When he saw her: Lily. A dog, not a human. She had a scared help me! look on her face, but not to worry, friends, Calvin, the canine companion was coming to the rescue. He checked Lily’s neck. She had a tag. He held her collar. And he soothed her while he made the call, the one that was supposed to get Lily home. To reunite loved one with owner. He dialed. One touch of the keypad after another.
And it rang. And rang. And rang again. It rang once more until there was a voice on the other end.
He got his hopes up, but it was in vain, because the voice on the other end was an operator, a computer, who said, “The number you’ve reached is invalid. Please try again.”
Calvin stood in the middle of the complex not sure what to do. Then, he looked up, and in the middle of the darkness, there was one light still on. He sighed. What a relief! It was Hannah. She was up late. Doing dishes. Awake finishing chores. He’d seen her before and knew she loved dogs, too. So, he trudged up the stairs to the second floor, Lily in tow, and knocked rap, rap, rap! on her apartment door. She opened it — a little unsure — but once he explained himself (and she saw Lily) her heart melted a little. For Lily. And maybe even a bit for him.
She explained that she didn’t know where Lily belonged. She couldn’t help him get her home. So he left, back to his place with his new four-legged friend. And, then, just an hour later, he got a knock on his door. It was Hannah. She’d found Lily’s owner, Sarah, a single mother of two (and now back to three).
They didn’t know each other sixty minutes before, but when Hannah and Calvin returned Lily to Sarah, she thanked them with a twenty dollar bill and told them, “Take this lovely girl out for coffee sometime, for sixty minutes… or more.”
Hannah and Calvin, we loved every second of our time with you and we can’t wait for your wedding this fall! Here are a few or our favorite highlights (it was SO hard to choose!) from our time with you. We hope you love them as much as we do!
