Dear Eileen and Erik,
Instead of writing about your wedding for everyone else to read, given the extenuating circumstances, we decided to break from tradition and write a letter to you.
To thank you. For everything.
Up until this weekend, you’d spent a year planning your wedding, and even longer dreaming about it. You made sure everything was just right, down to the last detail. You were ready. You were prepared. Everything was how you wanted it: perfect.
And then, the wedding day came, and something none of us envisioned happened. It rained. No, it poured. It was torrential. So much so that your ceremony got moved inside. At your reception, you nicknamed the gusts of wind and sheets of rain Hurricane Arizona and changed your wedding hashtag from #SmithBarn2014 to #SmithHurricane2014. And, despite it all, you smiled. Bright, wide, happy smiles. Ones with a sense of humor. Ones with a twist of irony. We could almost hear Alanis Morrisette singing in the background. It’s like raaain on your wedding day!
The one thing you couldn’t control — the rain — tried to take control of your wedding day, and as easy as it would’ve been to let it run away with it, you wrestled it back and controlled what no one else could: your attitude. To use an apt pun, you weathered the storm in more ways than one – and we’re so proud of you. We’re so proud that you two were ours that day, because it reminded us that we’ve truly got the best job in the world to have the pleasure of serving people who reflect so much of who we want to be, people who are able to be the light even when the sun’s not shining.
You told us after your wedding that you hoped we knew how much it meant to you that we never lost hope or gave up on capturing your day, how thankful you were that we stayed calm the entire time and just kept smiling, and how happy you felt that we were the ones by your side. To that, we say this: what we poured out in energy and effort is a direct reflection of what you poured into us with trust and support from the very start of this journey together, so if you felt completely overwhelmed with love, it’s because we were trying to be just a little more like you.
We love you both oodles and oodles.
