We all love adventures. Something new. Something unexpected. Something exciting. Something that breaks the same-old, tired routine and spices things up.
And, really, we’ve come to discover, our cats are the same way. Yes, you read that right, Internet, our cats. Except their definition of adventure and ours is just slightly different.
Our big ideas of adventure might include things like traveling the world together, meeting new people and exploring new places, but for our cats, there’s nothing more thrilling than when we sort the laundry, bring in new groceries or put fresh sheets on our bed. Their ears perk, their tails curl up in curiosity and they trot immediately to the source of action. Every. single. time.
Mr. Carson gets so excited on sheet-changing days, that he actually jumps onto the bed mid-sheet-fluff, and allows the sheets to fall on top of him slowly like a parachute. He lets the fresh scent and plush fabric billow all around him, and slowly envelop him as he basks in the glory that is fabric softener. Then, as the sheets begin to flatten, he army crawls all around the bed underneath the new sheets, like a child playing hide-and-seek, so if you were to walk into our bedroom, all you’d see is a big lump of sheet moving wildly around the bed. For those few minutes, he’s made himself a fortress of sheets, and there’s nothing more exciting in the world.
For us, we’ve had a lot of excitement lately, and it has nothing to do with fabric softener. We’ve been running at Energizer Bunny pace. We’ve been shooting, traveling, speaking, teaching, coaching, blogging, camp-counseloring (yes, we just made that a verb), pulling late nights, drinking a whole lot of coffee, still trying to spend time with our families and friends who we love more than anything and, essentially, running our tank on E for a while. And that is why this post is going up at night. Because today, the Energizer Bunnies needed a break. They needed to sleep in, and not feel bad about not showering, and letting the email inbox go for a few hours and sit across from each other on the couch in their pajamas and dream. And they needed a nap right in the middle of the afternoon. They needed to snuggle with William Wallace and Mr. Carson, who thought this day was as good as Christmas morning because of all the extra cuddles and blankets and lazy hours, the moments they live for, and soak in every minute of it. Us Energizer Bunnies? We needed a weekend… on a Thursday.
And. that. is. okay. In this industry where weekends don’t exist and the mythical “slow season” never comes, we’re finally starting to accept that every once in a while, we deserve a day to charge our batteries, neglect a shower and snuggle with that adorable face at the bottom of this post. And the world is not going to blow up, and our blog isn’t going to collapse and our business isn’t going to die. And when we give ourselves permission to take some time to just be, our clients are going to get served better because of it. That might be the best part of it all.
