Airports. Escalators and moving walkways. Ticketing lines and baggage claim. Security screens and flight delays. People going to the people they love, and leaving the people they love behind. That’s Eddie and Lindsey’s story. Three years ago, they said a tearful goodbye amidst the blur of thousands of people hustling past them when he left for medical school on the other side of the country. She didn’t know when she’d get to see him again…
Fast forward three years to the same airport, where they’d cried in each other’s arms. Where they’d watched forever be put on hold. Lindsey had planned fora girlfriend to come and visit her. It’d been on the books for months and her friend asked Lindsey to pick her up at the gate to help carry a large package through the airport. Curbside pickup wouldn’t do. After three years of airport hellos and goodbyes, Lindsey was used to parking her car and waiting just outside airport security. She and Eddie always walked each other as far as TSA would let them go, and they always greeted each other inside with a smile and a hug just outside the metal detectors upon arrival. It was their way of squeezing every last second out of their time together. So, there she was. Waiting for her friend. For a girls weekend. To help carry a package.
Or so she thought…
Standing there, she looked everywhere for her friend, but she couldn’t spot her in the crowd. She looked and looked, but her girlfriend wasn’t there. But, then, out of nowhere, her best friend was. Shock ran through her body. She couldn’t believe it was him. Through the crowd, walking right toward her, was Eddie. She couldn’t believe it. Through a tearful hug and kiss, she tried to grapple with the reality of what was happening. That he’d colluded with her friend — for months. That he’d had this planned from the start. A clandestine trip to see her. To surprise her. First with him. Then with his whole heart. Forever. And, just like he’d planned, he got down on one knee, right there in the middle of the airport, in the place where they’d said their first tearful goodbye three years before, and, just like that, the location of so much pain and sadness became the starting point in the story of the future.
