We love stories. Every couple has one. One of our favorite parts about being wedding photographers is meeting with newly engaged couples for the first time and hearing theirs. The newness of it. The freshness of it. The excitement of it. We can’t get enough of it! But, at the end, our couples always ask, “What about you?” So, we decided to share our story, too. From the high school bleachers to the end of the aisle, here’s our story from “I noticed you” to “I do.”

Part 12: Our Wedding Day

Jordan reached for the top drawer of his wooden desk, grabbed the cold metal latch, and opened it. He pulled out a piece of fresh notebook paper and smoothed his hands over it. He grabbed his best pen and uncorked the cap. He paused, closed his eyes, and pressed the tip of the pen against the paper for the first time. Dear Amy…  Black ink letters soaked through the thin paper. You and I have been dating for no more than a week now… The lamp’s light gave away his shaking hands. I cannot wait for the days ahead, walking step by step with you… He stopped and took a deep breath. I love you with all my heart and every fiber of my being. He wrote two full pages and signed the bottom. With all my love, Jordan. He folded the letter, tucked it neatly into the envelope, and addressed it to Amy with special instructions: Do not open until graduation night. It was only November…

Love is friendship set on fire

He wanted her to know how much he loved her, but he wasn’t ready to say it. Not yet. It might be too fast for her, he thought. He didn’t want to scare her. He just got her. He didn’t want to mess things up. Not again. So, he wrote his feelings down and told her to keep them safe. And she did. The letter sat upright on her bedroom desk for months, right where she left it. He checked the seal every time he came over (almost every day). But, like a promise, it was never broken. After only a few months of spending every moment together and squeezing every possible memory out of each day, Jordan decided that he was ready

for Amy to read it. He couldn’t wait any longer. She broke the seal. He watched on. She read one line, then the next. He inhaled heavily. She covered her mouth with one hand. He did, too. A tear streaked down her cheek. Then another. He smiled, and did the same. She finished, looked up, and threw her arms around him. He hugged her more tightly than ever. Like the missing half of a locket, he was complete. And so was she. He never wanted to let go. She loved him, too, and he was relieved. She sniffled. He could feel her happy tears falling onto his neck.

Then, through sniffles, she whispered something into his ear. It was the last line of the letter he wrote that from then on became the tagline of their love and later the motto of their marriage: Love is friendship set on fire.
